John A. Sherman Jr.

June 29, 1945 ~ March 14, 2020 (age 74)

Obituary

John A. Sherman, Jr., of Wilson, formerly a resident of New York, NY, passed away following a lengthy illness, on March 14, 2020.

John was born in New York City, and was graduated from Taft School.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University.  John's initial work experience was as a stockbroker.   After a few years in that position, he moved to the Western United States, first to Taos, New Mexico, and then to Wyoming, settling in the Jackson Hole area in the late 1970s.  After performing bookkeeping duties at a hotel and restaurant, John started his own business, Vintage Wines, through which he provided wines from U.S. and European sources to many hotels, restaurants, and individuals across much of Wyoming.

Outside his business, John loved music.  He was a talented musician, trained in clarinet and saxophone, which he played in the band while serving in the Air National Guard. He loved the jazz scene in New York, relating that he lived for a few years across the street from legendary trumpeter, Miles Davis. John particularly enjoyed going to the jazz clubs, such as the Village Vanguard, in Greenwich Village. His musical interest continued in Wyoming.  He regularly attended concerts and was an avid supporter of the Grand Teton Music Festival, including a number of years spent as a member of the Board for that organization.

John was predeceased by his parents, John and Marjorie Sherman, and by his sisters Donna Sherman and Jacqueline Sherman.  He is survived by his sister, Andrea Heft, and her husband Carl Steven Heft, by his nephew, Evan Heft, and by his niece, Lauren Siclare, her husband, Clemente, and their children, Eliana and Sebastian.
