C. Daniel Tyree

April 4, 1948 — September 14, 2020

C. Daniel Tyree, 72, of Moran, WY passed away September 14th.  Dan and his wife, Teri, came to Jackson Hole in the 1980s for a family vacation and fell in love with the landscapes and wildlife of the Tetons.  They set their sights on one day calling this special place their home and followed through in retirement, building a home on the banks of Pacific Creek. Over the last summer, though he was struggling with heart disease, Dan was able to spend quality time with his favorite people in his favorite place. From spontaneous classic rock dance parties to reading Dr. Seuss to his beautiful granddaughter to time fishing out on Jackson Lake and watching wildlife walk past his windows, he truly made the most of it.

Born in St. Louis, MO on April 4, 1948, he was raised by his mother, Catherine Baldecchi, and his grandparents, Nonny and Poppy. He had great memories of a childhood spent with cousins, playing and watching baseball and hawking soda with Poppy at events including the Boy Scout Jamborees.

Always a diligent student with a keen intellect, Dan graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Saint Louis University then went on to earn his M.BA. and J.D. from Rutgers before moving to Manhattan in 1973 to practice law. There he met Teri, his beloved partner for the next 47 years. At the time, Teri was working as an international flight attendant with TWA. Their early romance included rides in Dan’s trusty Karmann Ghia and spontaneous trips to cities including Paris, London, and Madrid.

In 1975 they married, and Dan made a career transition to Investment Banking at Salomon Brothers. It was a time when Wall Street was a place of boundless possibility and teeming with extraordinary characters. His career took off and his family grew with the birth of their daughter, Heather, and son, Ian, as they moved from Manhattan to Montclair and then Franklin Lakes, NJ. While Dan was establishing himself as a pioneer in the field of commercial leasing and high yield financing, he always found ways to spend time with loved ones whether cooking for his gourmet club or throwing the kids around in the pool at home.

Dan thrived at Salomon, rising through the ranks to become a Managing Director, accepting a new assignment and relocating his family to London in 1987. He embraced the challenges and intricacies of his job: pitching business and hammering out the details of big deals, finding creative solutions to problems, and winning the trust and confidence of clients and colleagues. He also took naturally to entertaining, combining business with pleasure over the course of fishing and shooting weekends, international conferences, and many banquet dinners. He genuinely enjoyed his position as the boisterous American banker in London, but also found time to explore the countryside and continent with Teri and the kids, spending memorable summers in the south of France and Tuscany. He proved himself an effective and much respected manager and mentor before returning to New York in 1990 to continue growing Salomon’s high yield businesses.

In 1992 he joined Lehman Brothers and returned to London with his family to run their European operations, followed a few years later by a move to Hong Kong to help grow their burgeoning Asian business. It was not uncommon for Dan to be in a new city each day of the week, closing deals even when they seemed on the brink of collapse and advising clients through crises. Though he was a busy executive during this phase of his life, he took great pride in private family moments. Over the course of his career he became a truly global investment banker, advising leaders of industry and politicians, cultivating lifelong friendships, and gaining a wealth of memories and remarkable stories before retiring in 2000.

Dan had a fulfilling second act in retirement, spending as much time as he could with family between homes in Jackson, South Carolina and Costa Rica. He remained active in the business and investing world, but his most cherished time was spent traveling, fishing and entertaining.

He worked his way through many passports over the years, diligently planning memorable trips with family, most notably a 40th anniversary trip through Italy and a 70th birthday trip to Spain. He developed a passion for fly fishing because it was a great excuse to travel to many exotic places. There may still be lost flies in the many waters he fished, but he made lifelong friends and caught fish in places as far flung as Mongolia and the Amazon River. In later years, he found peace fly fishing on Pacific Creek in Grand Teton National Park. Entertaining those around him was always a priority and pleasure. The passion he had for the places he had been was contagious and he loved any opportunity to share. He took great pride in his unfailing memory, being everyone’s favorite trivia partner, and great glee in bluffing his way to victory in a heated match of Perudo. He lived a full life, equally happy exploring the Pyramids or roadtripping across America, drinking vintage wine or sipping beer at a backyard bbq.

Dan was a tremendous father, friend, and source of wisdom for those who knew him. He will be remembered for his kindness, curiosity, intelligence, attention to detail, infectious laughter and humor, and genuine interest in and care for his family and friends. He was a generous, larger than life personality, always wearing a smile and full of life, joy, and stubborn optimism. He will be lovingly missed by his wife Teri, children Heather and Ian, daughter in-law Carrie, and granddaughter Sloane.

Family gatherings and a celebration of his life will be planned for early summer 2021.
